Deaf Theater Arts/Creative Movement

This workshop is for participants who are dealing with the challenges presented by “theatricalized” American Sign Language and on working with visual theatre techniques. Intended for students, this workshop consists of theatrical exercises designed to stimulate creativity, imagination, and theatrical inventiveness using our visual theatre techniques. As part of the workshop’s agenda, students are led in role- playing exercises and other activities which creatively focus on cooperation, trust, and problem solving. This workshop encourage students/participants to gain knowledge and skills in movement, It also increase their awareness for stage work/their presentation and develop character for the stage work.

Fred Beam

Fred is currently outreach coordinator of Sunshine 2.0, a touring theater troupe at NTID. He is also a theater director/choreographer, Mr. Beam has worked with numerous theater groups and dance companies. He has been Director of ASL in numerous plays at Kennedy Center, Arena Stage and community theaters. As a professional dance choreographer/dancer/actor, Fred has performed around the globe with The Wild Zappers, National Deaf Dance Theater, Gallaudet Dance Company, DuPont Dance Company, Penn Vision Dance Company and Bethesda Academy of Performing Arts. Fred has numerous stage/TV/Film acting credits at Goodman Theater, National Theater for the Deaf, Arena Stage and Kennedy Center include the leading role, Nicholas in By the Music of the Spheres, Stranger in Mad Dancer at Arena Stage, and the title character in Othello at Gallaudet University, and an award-winning show, The New Captain Kangaroo.  For his outstanding work with the deaf theater/dance community, He received numerous awards and recognition including one of Real Men of the Year in Essence Magazine, his work in Deaf theater in THEATER magazine and Deaf Person of the Month in DEAF LIFE magazine.
